What are scalp problems?

Scalp problems can affect anyone in Singapore, in fact, the most common scalp problem – dandruff, also known as seborrheic dermatitis or eczema of the scalp, affects approximately 50% of the world’s population. Scalp problems can occur to anyone at different stages of their lives, and it may be embarrassing and even painful, but are usually not caused by serious medical issues.

When left untreated, scalp problems can cause hair loss, thinning, inflammation, infections, and more. The most effective way to treat scalp problems is to identify its underlying cause, so treatment can begin as soon as possible to alleviate symptoms and improve your quality of life.

Some common scalp problems include:

  • Hair loss and thinning
  • Dandruff
  • Oily scalp and acne
  • Red patches, blisters, and inflammation
  • Sensitive scalp
  • Itchy, dry, and flaky scalp

Common causes of scalp problems in Singapore?

There are a number of causes of scalp problems. Hormonal changes, age, and lifestyle habits can all contribute to scalp problems. Additionally, medical conditions and certain diseases such as hormonal disorders, scleroderma, etc. have also been found to cause scalp problems.

In general, different scalp problems can be caused by different issues:

hairloss and thinning

Hair loss and thinning

Caused by common issues such as fungus, psoriasis, oily scalp, and dandruff. It is also caused by scalp ageing, due to decreased collagen levels and poor blood circulation.

dandruff

Dandruff, itchy, dry, and flaky scalp

A yeast-like genus of fungi called malassezia feeds on oils on the scalps of most adults. When this fungus gets out of control, the scalp becomes itchy, dry, and flaky. When it starts to shed, it is known as dandruff. Soap, detergent, stress, hormonal changes, and weather changes can also cause dandruff and dry patches to form on your scalp.

oily scalp

Oily scalp:

Excess amounts of oils and product build-up can clog pores and impede new hair growth, resulting in thinning hair or hair loss. An oily scalp can also signify an underlying skin order or lead to other dandruff-producing conditions. It may also cause scalp acne.

Red patches and inflammation

Typically caused by chronic skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. Red patches and inflammation may also be caused by allergic reactions to hair products or food, this is commonly referred to as contact dermatitis.

Sensitive scalp

Might be caused by a variety of factors, including dandruff, skin disorders, lice infestations, infections, migraines, or tension headaches. Sunburns, rashes, wounds, and insect bites can also cause scalp tenderness and sensitivity.

Are scalp problems painful?

Scalp problems can be painful and uncomfortable due to excessive itchiness and dryness. Patches can be tender and sore to the touch. Too much scratching may also cause bleeding and infections.

Scalp issues can also cause a loss of self-confidence and low self-esteem, due to the aesthetic effects of scalp problems such as flaking and hair loss.

When should I seek treatment for scalp problems in Singapore?

If you have tried one or more home treatments with little success, or if you notice any new or worsening symptoms despite your ongoing treatment methods, it might be time to visit your doctor or dermatologist.

Remember, while most superficial hair and scalp issues might improve with the use of a prescription-strength shampoo or over-the-counter solutions, chronic scalp and dandruff issues may require further evaluation, medical advice, and in-office treatment.

Tried many kinds of hair loss treatments. From finasteride and minoxidil to applying Chinese and none of them worked. Wasted so much money on my head for no results. But I finally found Artisan Hair, the place where I regained my hopes and confidence.
Really very good. First time see my hair so thick and gao. Last time go salon do all the hair treatment like no effect one. If I can give Artisan 10 Stars I confirm give, say real.
Have been affected by my hair loss issues since I was in poly and it really too my confidence away with it. Got to know or Dr Isaac Wong through a friend of mine and I dare say that his treatment methods really work.
